The Centre for Endangered Languages, Sikkim University is given a mandate to generate a wide range of studies that would fulfil not only Sikkim University’s objectives but also defines linguistic contours of the region in terms of preserving and promoting endangered languages as well as national and international endeavours with respect to endangered languages of the region.
The objectives of the Centre for Endangered Languages, Sikkim University is divided into three broad areas of interest and activity, each interacting and intersecting with the other:
• to create a profile of the language.
• to create a database of linguistic expressions.
• to create technological resources.
The Centre for Endangered Languages, Sikkim University is currently working on Bhujel, Gurung, Magar, Sherpa and Rai-Rokdung languages in collaboration with the respective communities of Sikkim and North Bengal. In the coming years, the Centre for Endangered Languages, Sikkim University is expected to work on other endangered languages of the region.
