Ethnolinguistic Second Fieldwork


Magar is one of the languages the CEL, SU has been pursuing its research on. On the 21st December, 2018 a team from CEL, SU comprising of Dr. Meiraba Takhellambam (Assistant Professor), Ms Hima S ( Research Associate) and Gangi Maya Magar (Resource Person) were invited by the community to participate and document the ceremony of Kul Puja, the ancestral worship at Kadamtam, East Sikkim. The ceremony was being organised after a period of nine years and was hosted by Mr. G.S. Manger. The ceremony is mainly to worship the elements of nature and their ancestors. The ceremony is performed during the night, usually throughout the night and animal sacrifices are performed to appease the ancestors.

The ceremony was conducted by the Wapa, the priest and was assisted by the Mul Upase, the person who assists the Wapa during the whole ceremony. The Bhuda paka, or the representatives of the older generation along with the other members of the community make up the whole party.
