Grammatical Fieldwork

From 6th-17th November, 2017 the grammatical fieldwork to collect detailed grammatical data such as word list, sentences, narrations and folk songs by administering the questionnaire prepared by the Centre for Endangered Languages, Sikkim University was undertaken. Following the pilot survey undertaken during the month of August, 2017, the linguists of Centre for Endangered Languages, Sikkim University ascertained that the Magar community at Lower Assangthang (South District) still use Magar as one of the languages of communication and the vitality of the language is quite robust. Following members participated in the field survey:

A total of 1759 sentences were collected and a lexicon of around 1300 words has been digitised. 22GB of audio recording of language consultants and interviews have been annotated. About 7.5 GB of photographs of artefacts, plants, and cultural items, and also some videos on Magar folk songs and folk tales were also recorded. The Centre for Endangered Languages, Sikkim University has prepared a sketch Grammar of Magar. An annotated corpus of nearly 1000 sentences (3.1 GB of Audio data) has been analysed. A dictionary of 1300 annotated words has been digitised and first version of an Android application has been created.
